Trestle Projects is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition Peers. The verb “peer” is defined as an act of peeking or looking and the noun “peer” refers to people who are considered equal to one another. An increased societal fascination with cameras has initiated their ubiquitous presence. From street intersections and commercial buildings to private residences and personal devices, cameras have become integrated into the background of our lives and the lines between public and private are... Trestle Projects is pleased to announce our upcoming solo exhibition by recent Visiting Artist Resident, Allison Kaufman. Conjuring contradicting emotions, her work often explores the performance of gender. Limited Time Offer features three videos that reveal emotions associated with masculine expressions of fantasy perpetuated by consumerism in the automobile industry. This show implies the temporary joy and hope experienced by both the consumer and the salesman.

Two of Kaufman’s videos, Motorin’ and Motorin’ Outtakes are lighthearted examples of consumers’ fantasy with motorcycle culture. Despite the motorcycle industry’s predominantly masculine marketing approach, it doesn’t deter a variety of ages and genders from posturing proudly on the bike at auto shows. Motorin’ is a compilation of video portraits that documents visitors posing like one might for a selfie--as an imagined persona or internal vision of oneself. Treating the motorcycle like an attraction at a theme park, a fleeting transformation occurs when people “try on” this iconic object that often symbolizes adventure and masculinity. Motorin’ Outtakes also takes place at an auto show but with a different perspective. Immersing the viewer in the crowd primarily attended by men, this video highlights the staged auto show atmosphere. The lines between audience and performer are blurred when figures of spectators obstruct or frame the view of the sitter.

During her residency, Kaufman was inspired to film crowded used car dealerships in Trestle’s Brooklyn neighborhood. The resulting video, 3rd Ave Car Dealerships, suggests the salesman’s fantasy of being successful through formulaic marketing techniques. The artist references these loud attempts to draw buyers' attention by combining imagery of fluttering pennants with audio from car salesman videos found on YouTube. Filmed so that the viewer looks up at the pennants, the once earnest and hopeful decorations become part of the landscape.  Worn and tattered, they echo a salesman’s weathered optimism.

Allison Kaufman is a video artist and photographer living in New York City. She received her BFA in Film and TV from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and her MFA in Photography, Video, and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. Kaufman has been an artist-in-residence at Yaddo, the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, the Constance Saltonstall Foundation of the Arts, and Penland School of Crafts.

Katherine Murdock is a freelance curator working in New York and New Jersey. Currently she is the Trestle Projects Curator-in-Residence. Murdock was the Assistant Curator at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. She managed over thirty curated group and solo exhibitions and organized over 60 community art exhibitions for the Art Center.
