The student will be introduced to fundamental oil painting techniques used for centuries since the development of the medium. By the end of the fifth class you will have begun to develop a familiarity with oil paint which will allow you to continue to learn on your own, regardless of whether your ultimate goal is to paint realistically or abstractly. Working from a still-life, each of you will develop a painting in stages and layers throughout the 5-week course. During this process various painting techniques will be introduced such as imprimatura, scumbling, glazing, and others. Each class will begin with a brief description of the particular technique we will approach in that class, as well as a brief demonstration by the instructor. You will spend the majority of the class painting, during which the instructor will offer help and critique to students individually.
